Sondra Hughes

Sondra Sue (Mackey) Hughes passed from her earthly life and joined her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the age of 83. She was born on July 24, 1940, in Durant, Oklahoma to Robert and Nathleen Mackey.  She married her high school sweetheart, David L. Hughes in Durant, Oklahoma. They celebrated their sixty-second anniversary on May 27, 2023. 

Sondra graduated from Durant High School in 1958 and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education. She was a life-long educator in Bryan County finishing her career as a business teacher at Durant High School.

She loved gardening, needlework, and cooking for her family. She collected antique dishes, Christmas decor, and cookbooks. Her happiest times were spent at the family cabin playing board games, hiking and sitting around the campfire. She and David spent many hours attending sporting events for their children and grandchildren.   

She is survived by her husband, David L. Hughes, of the home; children Melanie Merideth and husband Duane, Shawn Hughes and wife Julie, Todd Hughes and wife Hallie; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Nola and Brian Hecker, Henry and Nina; Lauren and Jonathan Rodriguez, Ellie and Benjamin; Kaley and Taylor Knox; Cole and Sarah Hughes and Heath; and Kyle and Chloe Hughes and Kinsley, all of Durant, Oklahoma.  She is also survived by her sister, Kelly Nelson and husband Tony, all of Durant, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Nathleen Mackey; her sister Sheron Wyatt, and her husband’s parents, Woody and Julia Hughes, of Calera, Oklahoma.

Sondra bravely battled Alzheimer’s and dementia for fourteen years.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Sondra’s memory.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 25, 2023 at Durant First Baptist Church with Reverend Garry McNeil and Chaplain David Kautt officiating. Sondra will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Calera.
