Shirley Carter

Shirley Carter of Durant, Oklahoma passed from this life on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the age of 76. She was born February 10, 1947 in De Queen, Arkansas to Horace James and Mildred Lucille (Manning) Allen. She married the love of her life, Benny Carter, on January 26, 1970 in Idabel, Oklahoma.

Shirley grew up in Sweet Home, Oregon and moved to her birth state of Arkansas in 1965. She moved to eastern Oklahoma in 1970, living in Pryor, Wright City, and Antlers, before she and Benny came to their forever home in Durant in 1973. Shirley was a housewife, taking loving care of her home and family. She loved to watch her ducks and chickens and enjoyed crocheting in her spare time.

Those left to cherish Shirley’s memory are her husband of 53 years, Benny Carter of Durant, Oklahoma, daughters Karen Sue Carter of Durant, Oklahoma and Julie Gail Muniz and husband Antonio of Denison, Texas, sisters Evelyn Kay Jordan of Foreman, Arkansas and Diane Spencer and husband Bob of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and her brother James Forest Allen and wife Teresa of Superior, Kansas. Shirley’s legacy lives on with her grandsons Matthew Ryan Carter of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Brenden Blake Carter of Durant, Oklahoma, and her granddaughters Tara Nicole Muniz of Denison, Texas, Tiffany Leanne Muniz of Denison, Texas, and Alicia Kayleen Muniz also of Denison, Texas. Shirley is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her father Horace James Allen, and her mother Mildred Lucille Manning Allen.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the Mead Cemetery with Brother Wes Schreier officiating.
